In what could be a huge embarrassment for the Chandigarh administration, the UT officials on Tuesday launched a probe into the official statement released by its Education Department which claimed a student named Harshit Sharma has been offered a job at Google as trainee with a stipend of Rs 4 lakh per month.

Last week, the Chandigarh Administration had issued an official release saying, “Harshit, a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33 of Class 12(IT stream) has been selected by tech giant Google for graphic designing. Initially, he will be trained for a one-year period for which he will receive a stipend of Rs 4 lakh per month. On completion of training, he will get remuneration of Rs 12 lakh per month. He was interviewed through video conferencing and was selected on the basis of posters designed by him. Principal, Indra Beniwal lauded him on his achievement.”

“Currently, we don’t have any information on our records with respect to Harshit Sharma’s candidacy,” a report in The Indian Express quoted Google’s spokesperson as saying.

Commenting in the unverified announcement made by the education department, UT Secretary for Education, BL Sharma said, “The official statement issued by the education department was not in my notice. I have asked Director, School Education to look thoroughly into the matter”.

According to several media reports, Harshit and his parents were not present at their home in Mathana village of Kurukshetra and his mobile phone was switched off.

On July 28, the school principal Indra Beniwal had informed the UT administration under her signature and stamp, about Harshit’s ‘selection’ at Google and termed it as ‘national achievement’.

“The student passed out from our school this year and he had come to the campus to inform us about the Google offer. He had sent me the letter on WhatsApp mentioning his recruitment with Google but I deleted the letter by mistake,” TOI quoted Beniwal as saying
