Protests rock IUST against detention of varsity student

Srinagar: The students of the Islamic University of Science and Technology in Awantipora protested against the detention of a student of the varsity.

Clashes broke out when the students hit the streets and tried to block the road.

Junaid Ahmed Akhoon was arrested by the police on Sunday from his home in Aragam village of Awantipora.

Akhoon was detained for questioning about his brother Salia Mohammad Akhoon, an active militant who was involved in recent bank robbery incident at Marhama Bijbehara, according to police. He is a student of Polytechnic college at IUST.

Reports also said that scores of students before hitting the streets held a massive protest demonstration in the University campus against the arrest of the student.

The students later pelted stones on the Police outside the campus of the varsity. Police retaliated by firing teargas shells. A student of the varsity informed that Police fired teargas shells inside the campus.
