Tamil Nadu Pollution Control orders closure of Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi after police shoots over 11 people dead

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has ordered the closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter plant in Thoothukudi with immediate effect and disconnected electricity supply to the unit early on Thursday.

Orders to close the plant were issued by the Chairman of the TNPCB on Wednesday. The power supply to the unit was disconnected at 5.15 a.m. on Thursday, sources said.

Delhi-based think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on Wednesday had claimed the plant due to its ‘potential of creating environmental hazards’ could not find favour with the three states and it had allegedly “flouted norms by misrepresenting facts” to get final nod for its operation in Tamil Nadu.

The police excess in Tuticorin continued on Wednesday, May 23, as they indulged in a fresh round of firing in the city’s Anna Nagar area. The police shot at protesters in the area, a day after 11 people were killed by the police during an anti-Sterlite agitation.

On Wednesday, one more person was killed. Twenty-two-year-old Kaliappan was killed in the police firing.
