Civil Society Coordination Committee welcomes NC’s boycott announcement

Srinagar: Hours after the announcement of the boycott of the proposed municipal and panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir the Peoples Democratic Party called for an all party meeting over the conduct of elections and Congress while expressing its surprise over the announcement of the boycott of municipal and panchayat elections sought the review of the decision on elections by Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Meanwhile Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society Coordination Committee has welcomed the decision of National Conference to boycott the proposed municipal and panchayat elections till the Jammu & Kashmir Government and as well as the central government clarify their respective stands on article 35 A.

The Peoples Democratic Party Chief Spokesman Rafi Ahmad Mir said, “the governor should call an party meeting to evolve a consensus over the conduct of municipal and panchayat elections in Jammu & Kashmir and simultaneously both the central and state government should clarify their stands on article 35-A afresh in view of the controversial argument of Jammu & Kashmir Government’s counsel Tushar Mehta before the supreme court of the country who has said that article 35 A is a gender discrimination case. We will decided future course after the return of party president Mehbooba Mufti to Srinagar.”

Reacting to the NC’s announcement of the boycott of municipal and panchayat elections in the state the Jammu & Kashmir State Congress President Gh Ahmad Mir said, “the decision of National Conference to boycott the forthcoming municipal and panchayat elections is suprising as the party president Farooq Abdullah had only few days back urged his party workers to get ready for participation in the panchayat and municipal elections to bring people out of the present morass.”

He added, “over night the National Conference President has shown a sea change in its stance by announcing the boycott of the elections till the state and central governments clarify their stand on article 35-A and this is a demand which Farooq Abdullah never raised during two years of PDP-BJP coalition rule when the controversy over article 35-A was at its peak. As far as I understand either Farooq Abdullah has come to known through the sources close to Governor about the possibility of the postponement of the elections or he has taken the decision on the basis of feedback from his party workers. Congress party would like the Governor to review the security situation and take a decision accordingly.”

Meanwhile Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society Coordination Committee has welcome the announcement of the boycott of municipal and panchayat elections in Jammu & Kashmir till the central and state governments clarify their stands on article 35-A in the Supreme Court.
