Wikileaks founder Julian Assange sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for ‘breaching bail conditions’

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to prison for breaching bail conditions after spending close to seven years inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Assange, who took refuge in the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape accusations, was arrested on 11 April after Quito terminated his asylum.

The 47-year-old was appearing at Southwark crown court, where Judge Deborah Taylor said that he had engaged in a “deliberate attempt to evade justice”.

Assange was arrested by British police after they were invited into the Ecuadorean embassy where he has been holed up since 2012.

Police said they arrested Assange after being “invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorean government’s withdrawal of asylum.”
