Workers of PDP, NC, Cong should unite, be ready to go to any extent to save special status: Mehbooba

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday vowed that mainstream political parties in the state were united to save the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

““We want that workers of PDP, NC, Congress and other parties unite so that we can be collectively ready to face any situation as and when it arises. We can go to any extent to save the special status of the state,” she told reporters in Budgam.

Asked when the all-party meeting would be held, she said, “It is (NC president) Farooq sahib, who has decided about the meeting.”

Mehbooba declined to comment when asked why NC vice president Omar Abdullah went to meet governor separately. “We won’t make any such statement this time which can affect the unity of political parties. We all have to unite this time to save the special status of Jammu and Kashmir,” the PDP chief said.

The former CM questioned the silence of government of India over the prevailing situation in Kashmir. “Why the students from NIT were asked to vacate, why advisory was issued asking tourists and yatris to leave Kashmir, why additional deployment of forces have been done, why Air Force and Army has been kept on high alert? What is the reason for this?” she asked.

“Why is government of India silent? Why isn’t anyone from GoI assure people of Jammu and Kashmir that nothing is going to happen? Where are those who always speak about ‘Kashmirayat, jamhoriyat and insanyat’. Why are they silent today?” Mehbooba added.
