Geelani conferred ‘Nishan-e-Pakistan’, country’s highest civilian award

University in Pakistan to be renamed in Geelani’s name  

Srinagar: The Pakistan Senate on Monday conferred the highest Civil award Nishani-e-Pakistan on Tehreek-e Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani “for his life-long services and sacrifices for the just and fair settlement of the Kashmir Issue in the light of UN Resolution and the right of self-determination in the light of UN resolutions, and the right of self-determination duly recognized by international law.”

The resolution was moved by Jamat-e Islami senator Mushtaq Ahmed and passed unanimously with a voice vote.

Besides conferring Geelani with the award, the Senate of Pakistan also called upon the government to name the proposed “Pakistan University of Engineering and Emerging Technologies” as “Syed Ali Geelani University of Engineering and Emerging technologies.”

The upper house of the parliament also called upon the government to include Geelani’s life struggles in the educational curriculum at national and provincial level.

The senate also stressed upon that government should “mobilise world conscience” to help the 90 year old veteran leader get the best medical treatment and the place of his choice.
