Srinagar parts shut on 31st anniversary of Gaw Kadal Massacre

Srinagar: A shutdown is being observed in parts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir to mark the 31st anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre.

Reports said, shutdown is being observed in Lal Chowk, Gaw Kadal and Maisuma areas to mark the anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre.

Over 50 people were killed in the ‘Gaw Kadal’ massacre and hundreds were injured. However police in its FIR mentioned death of 22 persons.

On January 21, 1990 more than 50 civilians were shot dead as armed forces opened fire on a procession passing over the bridge that connects Basant Bagh with Maisuma.

The incident had shaken the Valley evoking widespread anger against the then Governor Jagmohan who was running the affairs of the state under the governor’s rule.
