Uttar Pradesh: A right-wing Hindu organisation in Uttar Pradesh, held a “surprise drive” to ensure Muslims were not putting Mehendi on Hindu women’s hands on Hariyali Teej, a Hindu festival.

The group Kranti Sena, organised a group of men in Muzaffarnagar, and also asked shopkeepers not to employ Muslim hairdressers, a report by Times of India said.

“On the pretext of these odd jobs, Muslim youths entice Hindu girls and trap them in love jihad,” Kranti Sena general secretary Manoj Saini told The Wire.

“We have checked several shops and appealed to the owners to the owners to not employ Muslim youths as they indulge in love jihad on the pretext of applying mehndi on Hindu women earlier,” the report quoted Kranti further saying.

Videos of this group’s actions went viral on social media, after which the police filed an FIR on the matter.

According to The Quint, the FIR is against 51 members of the Kranti Sena – 11 named and 40 unnamed.

Shopkeepers in the area told the Times of India that they did not quite understand what the group wanted from them. “How can we employ people on the basis of religion?” one of them asked.

Pertinent to mention that “Love jihad” is a conspiracy theory used by right-wing groups who accuse Muslim men of using marriage as a lure to force Hindu women to convert to Islam.

The term was not recognised in India’s legal system until November, when the Uttar Pradesh government introduced the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020.

Notably, the law was passed despite the fact that Adityanath’s own administration – the Uttar Pradesh Special Investigation Team – had failed to gather any proof that such a conspiracy of forcible conversion exists.
