The Uttar Pradesh police filed an FIR under the Epidemic Diseases Act against members of students’ organisations for protesting against the police killings of two Muslims including a minor boy in Assam’s Darrang district last week, Maktoob Media reported.

The FIR was filed in the Kareli police station after the members of the Fraternity Movement, Students Islamic Organisation of India, All India Students Association, DISHA, WPI, PUCL, and Adhvikta Manch gathered at Atala on Sunday to protest against what it described as state atrocities on Muslims in Assam under the garb of land evictions.

The FIR has been registered against Fraternity leader Sarah Ahmad Siddiqui, Sabiya Mohani, Shaheen Fatima, Amit Pathak, Avinash Mishra, Shailesh Pasvan, Kamal Yusri, and over a dozen unnamed activists.

In a statement, the Fraternity Movement condemned the Uttar Pradesh police for intimidating protestors and trying to curb dissent and demanded that the FIR be quashed.

“We resolve to keep raising our voice against oppression and state-sponsored terrorism. We stand in solidarity with Sarah Ahmad and other activists named and unnamed,” read the statement.

The Assam BJP government’s forced eviction of hundreds of Bengali Muslim families from their homes accusing them of illegally occupying government land and police violence towards demonstration against eviction killed a 32-year-old Moinul Haque and 12-year-old Shaikh Farid and injured several people.
