Kulgam military Op: Slain militants identified, says police

Kulgam: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday claimed to have identified the two slain militants killed in a military operation in Okey area of Kulgam as Amir Ahmad Wani of Alamgunj Shopian and Sameer Ahmad Khan of Tiken Pulwama.

In a statement, police said, “Based on a specific input generated by Police regarding the presence of militants in village Okey area of Kulgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 9RR and 18Bn CRPF in the said area.”

During the search operation, police said as the joint search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to the operation.

In the ensuing operation, police said two militants of LeT/TRF were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the operation.

They have been identified as Amir Ahmad Wani resident of Alamgunj Shopian and Sameer Ahmad Khan resident of Tiken Pulwama, police said.

As per police records, the killed militant Amir Ahmad was a categorized militant linked associated with LeT/TRF, however; the other slain joined the militancy recently.

Both the slain militants, according to police, were part of a group involved in several crimes.

Incriminating material arms and ammunition including an AK-47 and pistol were recovered from their possession. All the recovered material has been taken into case records for further investigation, police added.

In this regard, police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated.

People are requested to cooperate with the police till the operation site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive material if any, the police statement ends.
