In wake of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, with Russian troops shelling in several parts of Ukraine, former US President Donald Trump warned that Taiwan may be the “next” for a potential invasion.

“Taiwan is going to be next. Just watch Taiwan; President Xi is watching with glee,” Donald Trump was quoted as saying in an interview with Fox Business on Wednesday.

Donald Trump also took a direct dig at US President Joe Biden. Trump said he expects Taiwan’s potential invasion “because…how stupid the United States is run.”

“They’re seeing that our leaders are incompetent, and of course, they’re going to do- this is their time,” Donald Trump was quoted as saying.

Trump also said China is watching the Russia-Ukraine conflict intently. He even suggested that Chinese President Xi Jinping is taking cues from the way the United States handled the evacuation of Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power last year.

“President Xi happens to be a man with a high intelligence level, and he looks at what happened in Afghanistan…He saw the way that we left Afghanistan…left American citizens there — is still trying to get out — he sees that, and this is his opportunity to do what he wants to do,” he said.

On February 24, Russia launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. Soon, questions were raised if Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will impact China’s plan to take Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen strongly condemned the attack, saying the invasion violates Ukrainian sovereignty and has eroded regional and global peace and stability.
