China calls for ‘independent, sovereign state of Palestine’

President of China Xi Jinping.

China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, joined his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, in Cairo to express a call for a Palestinian state and a ceasefire in Gaza.

Wang emphasised the necessity of establishing an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a joint statement, the ministers urged an immediate halt to all acts of violence, targeting civilians, and the destruction of civilian establishments.

In Gaza, the health ministry reported at least 23,968 casualties, primarily women and children.

Shoukry and Wang further proposed an international summit for peace, aiming to find a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian cause.

The summit would address the need to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent, contiguous Palestinian state.

Notably, the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority is based, remain separated by Israeli territory, a situation originating from the 1967 Six-Day War.
