Colleges, Schools remain shut but routine life resumes in Kashmir

Kashmir valley resumed its daily life after three days of strict restrictions and shutdown called by resistance leaders against the killing of top Hizb ul Mujahideen commander and his aide on last Saturday in Tral.

Banks, shops, public transport, and other government offices opened and started functioning smoothly from Wednesday morning.

But to prevent protests in Kashmir, all colleges and higher secondary schools and all such educational institutions were shut today.

Sabzar Ahmad Bhat and Faizan Muzaffar Bhat – the duo Hizb ul Mujahideen militants – died fighting armed forces in Saimoo village of Tral on Saturday. Following the death of the two Tral born militants, Kashmir observed spontaneous shutdown that day while on Sunday and Monday, Valley observed strike on the call of resistance leadership. The authorities sealed all the roads on Tuesday and blocked the solidarity march of people towards Tral.

According to an official from chief education office Srinagar, district Srinagar has thirty government run higher secondary institutions which were all shut today.

“There were orders from government order to shut them today as a precautionary measure,” officials said.

Kashmir valley had been witnessing massive anti-India protests by students since April 15 when Indian army men forced their entry in to the government run Degree College Pulwama which angered students resulting in clashes.

However, today, the Universities worked normally through out the day.

CEO Budgam, Indarjeet Sharma, while speaking to the FreePressKashmir, “thirty four Higher Secondary Institutions fall in district Budgam and all were closed today as a preventive measure as directed by the government.”

District Baramulla, CEO, Mushtaq Ahmad said, “we had shut forty three Higher Secondary Schools as asked by the government.”

Kupwara district has forty government run Higher Secondary Institutions and “every institution is shut today”, said CEO, Kupwara.

In Shopian district, ten Higher Secondary Schools were closed today, an official said.

Meanwhile, thirty, twenty, forty five and eighteen government run Higher Secondary Institutions were shut in Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag and Bandipora respectively.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu was thrown open for vehicular movement and over seven hundred fifty vehicles crossed Jawahar Tunnel to Kashmir Valley.

The authorities had closed the vital road link to outer world on Tuesday in view of the ‘Tral Chalo’ call by the resistance leadership.
