Police foils traders’ protest, arrests KEA chief

Srinagar: Many traders including chairman of the Kashmir Economic Alliance Mohammad Yaseen Khan were arrested by the police on Saturday while they were on way to the civil secretariat in order to protest against the proposed GST bill.

Leading a huge rally, Khan while marching towards the civil secretariat was arrested by a huge contingent of police who also halted the rally.

Taking to Free Press Kashmir Khan said, “We started assembling around 10:30 am at Lal Chowk and took the procession around 11:30. Later I was arrested at 11:45 am and was taken to Police station Kothibagh.”

He added, “I strongly condemn what the state administration is doing. They (state government) are not letting us to have our say freely. They have put curbs on us.”

Khan made it clear that their fight is against the implementation of the GST bill.

“We are not against anyone. We are only against the implementation of GST in the state”, he said.

When asked about their future plan, Khan said, “If GST is implemented in the state we will for sure come out on the streets against it. We won’t allow its implementation, “Khan said.

Khan also pointed out that the Government by applying the law will surrender the financial autonomy of the state to the GST council.

“Government is in the process of surrendering the fiscal autonomy of the state,” Khan mentioned.

Meanwhile, the business community of Kashmir valley is observing a complete shutdown against the government decision to implement GST. The shutdown was called by KEA, KTMF, also headed by Khan and several other business organizations of the valley.
