Kashmir killings: Valley parts shut in protest despite no call by resistance leadership
Srinagar: Most parts of Kashmir observed complete shutdown on Sunday in protest against killings by Indian armed forces in last few days.
Three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants died fighting the armed forces in Arwani area of Kulgam district on Friday while hundreds of civilians tried to break thruogh the ecnounter site to help the militants.
However, the armed forces including those from Ist RR of Indian army, CRPF and J&K Police did not let people come near gun fight site but killed two civilians including a 14-year-old student Ehsan Mushtaq.
A day earlier on Thursday, the armed forces shot dead a youth in Rangreth. He belonged to Bandipora.
The joint resistance leadeship called for a one day token strike against the killings. However, Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian and some parts of Srinagar remaied shut while the administration in summer capital also imposed restrictions.
Bandipora district also remained completely shut against the killing of civilian. However, there routine life remained unaffected in Kupwara, Baramulla and Budgam.
Six cops of J&K police including an officer were killed in a militant attack in Anantnag district on June 16 evening which was claimed by LeT. One cop was killed a day earlier in Hyderpora by unidentified gun men.
A spontaneous shutdown was observed in parts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama districts against these killings. This was the second consecutive day when shutdown was observed in these districts.
All shops and other business establishments remained closed in the town while public transport is off the roads. But since today was Sunday holiday, the offices and educational institutes were closed.
In Srinagar life in many parts was normal, but life as affected due to the restrictions imposed by the administration in police jurisdictions including Khanyar, MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Rainawari and Safakdal as “precautionary measure”.
However, civil lines and other localities in the city were normal as traffic plied normally. Shops and flea market saw a heavy rush of shoppers as they were purchasing household items for incoming Eid-Ul-Fitr.
Meanwhile, Baramulla to Banihal train services resumed this morning after remaining suspended for two days for security reasons in the Kashmir valley.
The train services were suspended on June 16 when an encounter ensued between militants and armed forces at Arwani.
The train services remained suspended yesterday also in view of the strike called by the resistance leadership against the death of three civilians in armed force action on outskirts of Srinagar and Arwani.
Today, all trains are running as per schedule between Sriangar-Budgam to Baramulla, a railway official said.
He said similarly rail service was also resumed on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag- Qazigund to Banihal.
