Roughing up of residents, vandalizing property during CASOs becoming a norm

Tral/Shopian: Government forces on Wednesday went berserk in Tral and allegedly thrashed dozens of people during a cordon and search operation in the area.

On Tuesday, grenades were lobbed at the CRPF camp in the area.

After roughing up people, they forced three people to return home who were observing Aaitqaaf in the local mosque. Aaitqaaf is observed in the last ten days of Ramzan in which the person stays totally aloof from worldly affairs and spends 10 days in the mosque.

Thrashing and vandalizing of property during search and cordon operations has become a norm now. On Monday, Army entered a village in Saidpora area of district Shopian and vandalized property after people celebrated Pakistan’s win over India in Champions Trophy final.

Villagers alleged that army entered the village and started throwing stones at vehicles parked on the roads and residential homes as well.

“They kept vandalizing our properties for about an hour,” said a villager.

Villagers also alleged that Army torched a bike, a sumo [JKO1F 2879] parked on street and a ford figo [DL10CF 0939] parked in a courtyard.

“They also damaged few other vehicles which were plying on Shopian-Saidpora road at that time,” said a local.

Villagers also mentioned that after vandalizing parked vehicles, they targeted residential homes.

“They threw stones at our homes breaking our window panes,” alleged a resident of the area.

A couple of youngsters who celebrated Pakistan’s win over India said that they didn’t provoke the forces in any way.

“Our celebrations were not a provocation in any way. What do they want now? After a couple of days we have Eid, shouldn’t we celebrate that too?,” asked an angry teenager.

A couple of days ago, similar reports of vandalism came in from vehil village of Shopian.
