Pistol borne man opens fire outside Jamia Masjid, injures three, triggers sharp reaction

Srinagar: An unidentified man opened fire on the faithful who were attending special prayers in historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar during the intervening night of June 22 and June 23.

As the faithful were busy with Shab-i-Qadr (special night long prayers during holy Ramzan when holy Qu’ran was sent down to mankind by Allah Almighty), a group of youth found suspicious movement of a few persons outside Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta Srinagar.

The special prayers, Taraviah, was being held inside the Jamia Masjid when the incident happened.

The person, who was reportedly taking pictures, was confronted by the group of youth when he took out pistol and fired several shots.

Three youth were hit; two of them were hit in foot and in abdomen. The trio was rushed to a nearby hospital where their status is reported to be stable.

The injured were identified as Danish Mir, Mudasir Ahmad and Sajad Ahmad Bhat.

Suspected to be an “a man of agencies”, however, J&K police have already clarified that “none of their cops was missing from duty”.

After the unidentified man opened fire, the group of youth sharply reacted which resulted in his death.

Police have taken custody of the body for identification.
