Cop killing: Police identify seven persons, arrest five

Srinagar: J&K police have identified seven persons alleged to have taken part in killing of deputy superintendent rank officer.

Muhammad Ayoub Panidth, a DY SP officer of J&K Police, posted with security wing of the state force, was killed when he fired upon a group of people outside historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar during the intervening night of June 22 and 23 when Muslims across Kashmir were commemorating Shab-e-Qadr (the night of power when Almighty Allah is believed to have sent down holy Qur’an to mankind).

Director General of J&K police, DR S P Vaid, on Saturday said that the police have identified seven persons in the case, so far.

“We have arrested three more,” he said. “… and we identified seven persons so far.”

J&K police had arrested two persons on Friday taking the number to five as three more have been arrested. “The questioning of all the accused persons is going on,” a police official said.

Quoting preliminary investigation, the police chief had on Friday said, “mob attacked the DSP when he was coming out of the mosque after checking the access control.”

“When the DSP was coming out after checking the access control of the mosque, some miscreants caught hold of him while raising slogans and started beating him up,” he said.

Vaid said that two persons have been arrested so far and a third has been identified.

“All of them (involved in the lynching) will face the law,” the DGP told reporters on the sidelines of the wreath-laying ceremony for the slain officer at district police lines here.

He said tat investigation is going on in to the case.
