Burhan death anniversary: Joint Resistance Leaders call for shutdown, awareness

Posted on

Srinagar: Amid tension regarding the events that might unfold on July 8, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) on Tuesday issued a protest calendar commemorating the first death anniversary of the popular Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani.

Burhan was killed last year on July 8, in an encounter with the Indian security forces, catalyzing a massive uprising in the valley.

The JRL leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar, Yasin Malik in a joint statement have called for complete shutdown on July 8 and July 13 to pay tributes to Burhan Wani and July 13 martyrs.

A rally will be held at Tral to pay homage to Burhan and all the “martyrs”, on July 8, as per the calendar.

Similar rallies will be held at all district headquarters and elsewhere in the world where Kashmiris are residing.

The leaders made no comments about July 10 and July 12, calling people to visit the slain persons’ residences on July 8. They also called out to people to participate in an online “Kashmir awareness Campaign” on July 11.
