11 Amarnath pilgrims die as bus falls into gorge in Ramban

Tyre burst believed to be the reason for the accident.

Jammu: 11 people who were on a pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave, a holy place for Hindus, have died in an accident on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway. Sixteen passengers are said to be injured.

The bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims or yatris fell into a gorge.  The accident took place near Ramban along the highway. The bus was part of the official Amarnath Yatra convoy

Last week, eight Amarnath pilgrims were killed in a suspected militant attack in Anantnag.

The annual pilgrimage to Anantnag – amid tight security – is scheduled to conclude on the August 7. This year, the authorities have decided to allow 7,500 pilgrims to visit each day.The cave shrine is located at a distance of 46 kms from Pahalgam and 14 kms from Baltal.

Reports quoting an official said that the tyre of the bus burst at Nachilana on the highway.
