Srinagar: An orientation cum workshop on Goods and Services Tax (GST) was held on Tuesday in Srinagar  at the Divisional Commissioner’s office.

Additional Commissioner Kashmir, Additional Commissioner Commercial Taxes, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Deputy Director Planning and other concerned officers attended the workshop whereas other Deputy Commissioners of Valley districts participated in the camp through video conferencing.

Additional Commissioner Commercial taxes informed that till July 15, 2017 a total number of 71,518 provisional Ids of GST were generated out of which 30,787 were activated and rest of the process will be completed by ending July this year.

He further informed that teams will be deployed in all districts of the Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil which shall provide training to all concerned officers about various aspects of the GST.

During this workshop, Deputy Commissioners spoke about the new tax regimes implementation in their respective districts.

The new tax regime was extended to the state of Jammu and Kashmir after much hue and cry that it will erode the special status of the state provided under the Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. However, the government said that the Presidential Order related to issue has provided all the safe guards and the special status of the state has not been compromised.

However, the civil society and the traders recently said that the Presidential Order has no safe guards and demanded a role back of the GST bill.
