Revive Lahore Declaration for peace in the valley: Mehbooba to GoI

Posted on

Srinagar: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said that in order to restore peace in the valley, the Government of India should restore the Lahore Declaration.

“I appeal to the Centre to revive Lahore Declaration so that we can live peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mehbooba said while addressing workers during the party’s Foundation Day in Srinagar.

This was PDP’s largest rally after the 2016 uprising.

The Lahore Declaration is a bilateral agreement and governance treaty between India and Pakistan. It was signed in 1999 after the Kargil war by then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his Pakistan counterpart Pervez Musharraf.

Mehbooba also pointed out that the trade routes with Pakistan should not be blocked. Instead, there should be a crackdown on drugs which are smuggled from across the border.

Mehbooba’s statement comes after she said that any changes made in the Article 370 will not be acceptable and no one in Kashmir would hold the tri-colour.

Her alliance partner in the state the BJP as well as the Prime Minister’s office called it a ridiculous statement.

“This is the most shocking and ridiculous statement which Mufti has made. Tricolour is sacrosanct to us. It will fly high in Jammu and Kashmir as much as it does in any other state of the Indian Union. Being in power does not make one misuse it!” ANI quoted Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office (MoS PMO).
