10 dead, many trapped in Mumbai building collapse

Mumbai: A five-storey residential building in Mumbai came crashing down on Thursday morning. At least 10 bodies have been recovered from the debris.

Over 20 injured have been taken to hospital. Several others are still feared trapped under the debris of the old building.

The 12-room building, also included six go-downs on the ground floor, crumbled at around 8:30 AM.

The 50 year old building, named Arsiwla, on Pakmodia Street in Bhendi Bazaar area of Mumbai was undergoing some redevelopment work when it came crashing down.

According to several reports, the number of casualties might rise.

The number of people trapped in the building’s debris is yet to be ascertained but initial reports suggest as many as 50 could be trapped. The police also suspected gas leakage in the area, following which electricity was snapped in the surrounding buildings.

The Chief Fire Officer and Commissioner of Police have also been mobilized. Fire brigades and rescue teams have arrived at the spot. An NDRF team is also assisting in the rescue work, reports said.
