The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has said that he does not need to celebrate the Muslim festival Eid since he is a Hindu.

“I don’t celebrate Eid. I am a Hindu,” Adiyanath while speaking in the UP assembly on Tuesday.

Yogi was referring to his recent visit to Mathura for the festival of Holi where, according to him, a journalist asked him whether he could celebrate Eid too. Holi, also known as the “festival of colours”, is a Hindu spring festival celebrated all across India.

“I said I don’t celebrate Eid. I am a Hindu and I am proud of it. If anybody wants to celebrate Eid peacefully, the government will cooperate and provide security,” Yogi said, according to a report in Hindustan Times, a daily newspaper published in India.

Yogi further said “There is nothing wrong in being proud of being a Hindu. We are not hypocrites who put on janeu (sacred thread) at home and don another cap when we are out.”

“Main Eid nahi manata hun, main Hindu hun.. mujhe garva ki anubhuti hoti hai…. Ghar mein baith kar koi janeu pehne aur bahar topi pehenke nikle, yeh dhong aur pakhand BJP sarkar nahi kar sakti (I do not celebrate Eid, I am a Hindu and I am proud of it. Wearing a sacred thread at home but coming out wearing a cap…this kind of hypocrisy is not something the BJP government indulges in),” he said, according to a news report in The Indian Express. According to the report, he further added that if someone wants to celebrate Eid peacefully, the government would provide all support.

Meanwhile, in another news report, referring to the sweeping win in the North-east by Yogi’s party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) he said, “We have brought down the red flag (Left Front rule) in Tripura. We will bring down the red cap (donned by Samajwadi Party leaders) here. This is the time for saffron,” said Yogi amid commotion following protests from leader of the opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary and SP members.

“Samajwadis worked for freedom of India,” said Chaudhary while responding to Yogi’s observations, “We will ‘break’ those who speak about division of India.”

The House was adjourned till March 11.
