Two feared dead as gunman takes hostages at supermarket in France

Posted on

Two people are feared dead as a gunman burst into a supermarket in southwest France, and took those inside as hostages. The man entered a Super U supermarket in Trebes, Carcassonne at around 11 a.m and gunshots were heard inside.

French PM Edouard Philippe tweeted that the hostage situation appears to be a “terrorist act,” adding that he would be cutting short an official trip to return to Paris.

Prosecutor sources told AFP that the man had claimed allegiance to ISIS.

A security source said the two were killed in the attack at a Super U store in the town of Trebes.

Armed police were also responding to the earlier shooting of a policeman in the town of Carcassonne, 15 minutes drive away, which took place at around 11 am (1000 GMT).
