Youth killed, around 17 injured after clashes erupt in Anantnag

A youth identified as Sheeraz Ahmad Naikoo was killed after armed forces allegedly fired pellets into protesters in Anantnag on Saturday.

Youth took to the streets soon after Eid prayers and pelted stones at armed forces who were deployed in the area. Forces responded by firing tear gas and pellets, triggering further clashes.

At least seventeen youth have been injured in the forces’ action, officials said, adding that all the injured were shifted to district hospital Anantnag for treatment.

One among the injured, Naikoo, who is a resident of Brakpora succumbed at the hospital. He had reportedly sustained pellet injuries in his throat and head. Also among the injured two have sustained injuries in their eyes and have been referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment.

Police however have denied that the civilian died in clashes.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that a Hand Grenade exploded resulting in the death of one Sheraz Ahmad S/O Gh Mohiuddin R/O Brakpora due to splinter injuries and his right hand got fully damaged. Further details are being ascertained,” police said in a statement.
