Srinagar: Acting on a tipoff, Indian army’s 34 RR, JK police’s Special Operations Group and central police CRPF’s 14bn cordoned Kundalan village of Shopian in the wee hours on Tuesday, triggering a fierce gunfight.

In the exchange of fire, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) and an army man were injured.

While the JCO has been shifted to army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar for specialized treatment, reports said that at least three militants are trapped inside the house of Mohammad Yaqoub Parray in the village.

Amid fireworks, reports said, some of Parray’s family members are still trapped inside the house.

Among the militants, one has been identified as Zeenat Ahmad Naikoo, who’s affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad.

His father Isaq Naikoo suffered a heart attack upon learning that his son is one among the trapped militants.

He was rushed to Shopian hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Meanwhile, as the news of the gunfight broke out, people took to streets and pelted stones on the forces. To disperse the protesters, forces responded with tear smoke shells and pellets.

As the gunfight rages on, a youth has been injured and rushed to treatment.
