‘North Korea will permanently abolish key missile sites in presence of foreign experts’
North Korea will, in the presence of foreign experts, ‘permanently’ abolish key missile sites and will close the main nuclear complex if U.S acts reciprocally, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
During a joint news conference after the Pyongyang summit talks, both Moon and Kim Jong Un said both had agreed to turn the Korean peninsula into a “land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats.”
Kim further said he will visit Seoul later in the near future, which will the first visit by a North Korean leader.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, at a news briefing on Tuesday expressed hope that the summit would kickstart “meaningful, verifiable steps towards the denuclearisation of North Korea” and said it was a “historic opportunity” for the North-Korean leader to fulfill the promises made to Trump.
US officials close with the negotiations said that North Korea has refused to start negotiations on even defining denuclearization.
Earlier, both leaders met each other for the third time to kickstart denuclearization in the peninsula and ending the 1950-53 Korean war. Moon was welcomed by a sign which read, “ardently welcome President Moon Jae-in’s visit to Pyongyang’, AP reported.
North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in a statement said that the summit is an important opportunity in “further accelerating the development” in relations between the rivals, reported AP.
Moon said he would push for “irreversible, permanent peace”, having been dubbed as the ‘chief negotiator’ between U.S President Donald Trump and Kim.
Earlier, Kim Jong Un renewed his commitment to full denuclearisation after the September summit between South Korea and North Korea was announced, AFP reported.
