Srinagar: A Kashmiri Engineering student of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jangeeri was allegedly beaten by some ‘goons’ at TDI City.

The student identified as Mubashir Mattoo was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after he was allegedly beaten at rented flat of one Mudasir during the night at TDI City of Chandigarh.

He said that “some goons knocked me down and started punching on my face and stomach and hitting on my knees. They thrashed me with iron rods and knives, I was beaten to pulp.”

“I tried to escape from my flat but I could not,” he added. “We are being threatened, beaten for no reason. Our only problem is that we are Kashmiris,” he said.

Several Kashmiri students who are friends of Mubashir said that they approached the police in this regard.

A Police official from the concerned police station, Mahender Singh said “We have taken cognizance of the incident and investigation is currently underway.”

The Kashmiri students complained that they were being continuously harassed by the local students, which created apprehensions of further attacks on them.

Meanwhile, parents of the Kashmiri students urged the state government to intervene in this regard to ensure safety of their kids in Chandigarh.

The Punjab Students’ Union on Tuesday had protested in various districts of Punjab against the ‘harassment’ of Kashmiri students that have taken place recently in different universities across India.

In a statement, the State President Rajinder Singh, General Secretary Karamjit Kotkapura and Press Secretary Mangaljit said that the arresting of Kashmiri students in Punjab, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Rajasthan under the different charges including sedition were not acceptable.

While speaking at an event sponsored by Department of Tourism Jammu and Kashmir, the Governor Satya Pal Malik Thursday mentioned Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) controversy in his speech and announced to recruit liaison officers at places where more than 12 Kashmiri students would be studying in India.
