GoI appoints former Economic Affairs Secretary as RBI Governor
The Government of India on Tuesday appointed former Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das as the new RBI Governor, a day after Urjit Patel resigned.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shaktikanta Das, former Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years,” an official order said.
Das, a 1980 batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu cadre, was a member of the Finance Commission of India.
According to a statement issued by the central bank attributed to Patel, “On account of personal reasons, I have decided to step down from my current position effective immediately.”
The statement added, “It has been my privilege and honour to serve in the Reserve Bank of India in various capacities over the years. The support and hard work of RBI staff, officers and management has been the proximate driver of the Bank’s considerable accomplishments in recent years.”
