President has not made a determination to drawdown US troops in Afghanistan: White House

Posted on

The White House has refuted reports that US President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw almost half of American troops stationed in Afghanistan, reported the Bloomberg.

Last week, the Washington Post. had reported that Trump was planning to withdraw 7,000 troops from Afghanistan by the summer.

The report had added that, roughly half of the troops present in the country, could go back home within months. The report further added that the move, many of Trump’s senior advisers and military officials have warned will plunge the country further into chaos.

Moreover, an American official hold told AFP on condition of anonymity “that decision has been made. There will be a significant withdrawal.”

However, White House and US National Security Council spokesperson Garrett Marquis on Saturday rubbished those claims in an emailed statement, saying: “The president has not made a determination to drawdown United States (US) military presence in Afghanistan and he has not directed the Department of Defense to begin the process of withdrawing US personnel from Afghanistan.”

The order had come a day after Trump claimed that US has defeated ISIS in Syria and ordered the withdrawal of troops from the country.
