West Bengal battered by cyclone Amphan, 6.5 lakh evacuated, 72 dead; 1,000 crore package announced by Modi

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on Friday conducted an aerial survey of areas affected by cyclone Amphan in West Bengal.

Modi was accompanied by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. After taking stock of the situation, Modi announced a relief of Rs 1,000 crore for the state.

“He announced Rs 1,000 Crore for the emergency fund but he didn’t clarify whether it’ll be an advance or a package. He said he’ll decide later on but he said it may be advance also. I said whatever you will give you decide, we’ll give you details,” West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has said.

West Bengal and Odisha have been battered by super cyclone Amphan as 6.5 lakh people have been evacuated. 72 people have bene reported dead.

Bangladesh too has shifted over two million people to storm shelters and deployed the military to deal with the powerful cyclone ‘Amphan’.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina said on Wednesday, “we are taking all possible measures that we should adopt for protecting the lives and properties of the people from the cyclone.”
