Srinagar: Sikh leaders across Kashmir have come out in unison against ‘attempts to spread tensions between communities’ and have urged the people to not jump the guns and wait for police investigations.

The statements come after a robbery case at a Gurdwara in Srinagar and hanging of a Sikh man in Kulgam, were used by different groups online to spread communal tensions.

Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Senior Member, Navjet Singh said the burglary in a Gurdwara is a clear a theft and no one should see it in a communal way.

“A robbery is a robbery and their is no need look at this in a communal way,” Singh said.

“It should not be projected as an attack on Gurdwara Sahib by any particular community because in the recent times burglary has even taken place in Masjids and Temples of the valley. It’s really important that the culprits get punished,” he added.

Another Sikh leader, Malkit Singh, President of the Gurmat Taksal, Jammu and Kashmir, said that the religious practices of Kashmiri Sikhs have never been hurdled by the Kashmiri non-sikhs.

“Issues may be there, but both the Muslim and Sikh communities have been living in harmony. And the death of the man who was found hanging is being projected as an act of terror, but this isn’t the fact because neither any organisation nor any movement will be benefited from this,” Malkit Singh said.

Sikh activist, Angad Singh also made an appeal to the Sikhs across the globe. Kindly don’t make your own conclusions without any investigation, the robbery is very unfortunate, but this incident in Kashmir should not be given a communal colour.”

Referring to the incident in Kulgam where a Sikh man was found hanging by a tree, Angad said, “the incident in Kulgam is under police investigation. Let police investigate this matter, whether it is a suicide, a crime for a dispute, or any other case. Let us not jump the guns.”
