Srinagar: A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sajid Bin Sayed, for his alleged ‘anti-national’ statements criticising the Indian Army and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

In a tweet, which now stands deleted, Sayed raised controversial allegations against the dense militarization of the Kashmir valley, accusing Army of executing “genocide” on behest of RSS, in Kashmir.

According to a report by a Delhi based news organisation India Today, Sayed in a tweet said: “Indian Military execute systematic genocide of Kashmiris which is devised by RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]. The BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] govt should stop their territorial greed and be ready to accept Kashmiris’ right to self-determination guaranteed by the UN. It’s high time to intervene in the issue by international bodies. #Kashmir.”

On July 8, moments after a complaint was filed against Sayed at Kapashera Police in Delhi, an FIR was registered against him.

As per the FIR, the complainant Tajinder Yadav, in his complaint stated that he was a “social activist” and wanted to bring the attention of the police to “anti-national activities of a JNU student,” The Print reported.

Sayed, who is also the president of the Campus Front of India- a student organization based in New Delhi, has been booked under section 153A IPC (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 504 IPC (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), by the Delhi Police.

Sayed reacted to the FIR through a twitter thread claiming that “constitution grants the freedom of expression to everyone” and termed it an attempt to suppress the voice of dissent. He said he is not the first person who has been “targeted” for criticising the government.

“The constitutional rights of Kashmiris have been denied for many years and it’s escalated since the abrogation of article 370 in August 2019. Speaking for the rights of Kashmiris is not a crime to book under 154 and 405, (sic),” Sayed tweeted:

He further accused the BJP government of treating Kashmiris in an “un-constitutional and undemocratic war”.

“There are many behind jails but still their voices echoed. We will continue criticizing the government’s anti-people policies and fight against hindutva”, his tweet read.

The FIR said quoting Yadav’s account, “I have come across some information which is anti-national and goes against the interest of our country. The said information talks about India’s army and its soldiers in bad light implying that they are working against the nation. This has the effect of disturbing the integrity of our country and its respected army.”
