24 killed, 43 wounded in attack in Afghanistan’s Jalalabad city

Srinagar: At least 24 people were killed after a gun battle between Islamic State fighters and Afghan forces raged at a prison in the eastern city of Jalalabad city of Afghanistan on Monday.

According to a report by Economic Times, as the IS gunmen opened fire on security guards following a car bomb blast detonated at the entrance of the prison, there were numerous other blasts later on.

Quoting, Attaullah Khugyani, a spokesman for the governor, said that three militants were killed during the initial attack and gun battle overnight, while at least 21 civilians and members of security forces died in the fighting, and 43 were wounded.

The report added that chaos in the prisons led many prisoners to escape from the captivity, however, police were forced to divert manpower to recapture escaped prisoners and by noon today around 1,000 had been caught.

Officials from the country briefed to media reporters that Afgan Special Forces arrived to support its police and civilians who were being evacuated from areas surrounding the prison.

Pertinently, the prisoners from Taliban and IS prisoners were being held at the same place, along with ordinary criminals.
