Aasif Sultan not produced before court today, next hearing scheduled on October 6

Srinagar: As the TADA Court was scheduled to hear the case of journalist Aasif Sultan on Saturday, none of the accused was produced, neither through virtual mode nor physically.

Sources said that no prosecution was witnessed in the court today thus delaying the case further.

By virtue of the order passed by Chief Justice on September 1, all the courts falling under red zone will be locked down till September 20, 202o. The next date of the case has been fixed on October 6, 2020.

Pertinently, there have been no proceedings taking place after removal of Artlice 370 on August 5, 2019, followed by COVID outbreak, and none of the witnesses have been examined so far, resulting in delaying of the cases.

Sultan, who covers politics and human rights for the Srinagar-based print magazine Kashmir Narrator, has been detained since August 27, 2018, under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), for his alleged complicity in “harbouring known militants.”

Sultan was bestowed with the annual John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award in 2019 by the National Press Club of America, which said that it was being given “to a journalist in Kashmir jailed for nearly a year for his reporting” who has “doggedly produced important accountability-journalism despite harassment from powerful people and has been on a slow-paced trial ever since.”
