Thought Crime: Cyber Volunteers to patrol online world, flag ‘anti-national’ content
New Delhi: Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has been established under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to act as a nodal point at the ‘National level in the fight against cybercrime’, according to a notification on MHA’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has started the registration of private citizens as volunteers to monitor the internet and report alleged cybercrimes to the government, it announced in a press release.
Under the program, the Government has decided to set up Cyber Crime Volunteers’ corps to keep an eye on the “anti-national activities” on social media.
‘Cyber Volunteer Unlawful Content Flagger’ will be responsible for “reporting online illegal/unlawful content like child pornography, rape, terrorism, radicalization, anti-national activities, etc.”
The program aims to provide a platform to deal with cybercrimes in a “coordinated and comprehensive manner”.
“One of the important objectives is to create an ecosystem that brings together academia, industry, public and government in prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of cybercrimes,” the notification read.
The Government of India has asked people to register as Cyber Crime Volunteers in the role of Unlawful Content Flaggers for facilitating law enforcement agencies in identifying, reporting and removal of illegal/unlawful online content.
