Kashmiri journalist named ‘newcomer of the year’ by Free Press Unlimited

A Kashmir based journalist, Bhat Burhan has won the ‘Newcomer of the year-Hans Verploeg Award 2021’ by Free Press Unlimited. The winners of the award were announced during a festive ceremony on Tuesday in the Hague, Netherlands.

Currently, Burhan works as an independent journalist and filmmaker and have been reporting about several issues from Kashmir and parts of India.

The Free Press Award in the category ‘Newcomer of the year in Journalism’ recognizes the talented new journalists who have put in a strong performance in the field of reporting from their respective places. The nominees demonstrate their commitment to press freedom and independent coverage.

Another journalist from Bangladesh, Rozina Islam has won the award for ‘Most Resilient Journalist’.

The Free Press Award in the category ‘Most Resilient Journalist’ is presented to a journalist who has demonstrated extraordinary strength of character, courage and perseverance in reporting the news.

The other nominees for the award are Aye Myint Thant from Myanmar and Israel Graca Campos from Angola.

Free Press Unlimited said that these journalists who have won the awards “work from very challenging environments and have shown great commitments in their work to inform the public”.
