Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) on Tuesday demanded an immediate release of Khurram Parvez and withdrawal of “fabricated” cases including the UAPA, made against him and JKCCS.

Parvez, a leading human rights defender of Kashmir, was arrested on the 22nd of November 2021.

The arrest was carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India after they raided the JKCCS office and his house in Srinagar, Kashmir.

“Khurram has been charged under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) as well as provisions of CrPC, including 120(b). Khurram is internationally recognized for his persistent fight against human rights violations in the valley,” the statement said.

Over the last more than 20 years, JKCCS has built its credibility by courageous ground investigations and the use of international human rights laws and conventions.

“The valley has recently been subjected to increased instances of violence,” it said, adding “the killing of civilians, the refusal to return their bodies to their families, the quelling of all forms of public mourning and protest only throw open the current experiences of the people of the valley”.

Since August 2019, the valley has witnessed increasing “suppression of democratic dissent and attack on the media and reporters”, the statement added.

The forum added that all forces of reason must come together to condemn the silencing and PIPFPD also calls upon people of South Asia to stand up against the “harsh and undemocratic” act of the Government of India.
