33 cases of Omicron reported in India so far: GoI
New Delhi: India has reported 33 cases of the new COVID variant Omicron so far, which according to the Health Ministry of India, is a cause for concern.
The rise in the cases is because people have been wearing masks less and less, the Government of India said.
In this regard, the country’s Cabinet Secretary is set to hold a review meeting to take stock of the situation.
Health Secretary of India Rajesh Bhushan on Saturday wrote to the chief secretaries or administrators of all the states and UTs, which have been reporting high COVID positivity rates over the past two weeks.
Bhushan, in the letter, said that there are 27 such districts across 10 states and UTs in the country that need to be “monitored very closely”.
The strategic containment interventions for the identified areas, in case there is an emergence of COVID clusters, would include night curfews, restriction on the gathering of people, congregation, and curtailing of attendees in marriages and funeral functions, reads the letter.
According to the GoI, India’s daily positivity rate, at 0.64%, has been less than 2% for the last 68 days. At 0.71%, the current weekly positivity rate in the country has remained less than 1% for the last 27 days.
On Saturday, the country’s Health Ministry said that 7,992 COVID cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours. The death toll mounted to 4,75,128 with the addition of 393 fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.
