Arresting women in Kashmir marks a new low, says Mehbooba Mufti
Srinagar: While reacting to the arrest of the mother-daughter duo on charges of allegedly raising ‘anti-India slogans’ after a military operation in Srinagar on Monday, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that arresting of women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration.
On Wednesday, the mother-daughter duo was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police for allegedly raising ‘anti-India’ slogans after the Rangreth shootout that, according to police, resulted in the killing of two militants.
While retweeting a news story about the arrest of the duo, Mehbooba said, “Arresting women in Kashmir marks a new low for the administration that persecutes civilians only to please their masters in Delhi.”
She added, “The situation is getting worse & instead of reaching out to the people, GOI is pushing them to the wall.”
Earlier, a report quoting official sources said that the mother, daughter identified as Afrooza wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi, and her daughter Aisha daughter of Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi, both residents of Rose enclave Wanbal Rawalpora in Srinagar outskirts were arrested on the charges of allegedly raising ‘anti-India slogans’ in the aftermath of the Rangreth shootout.
They said the duo were arrested by Police Station Saddar and were later shifted to Women’s Police Station Rambagh after completing the legal formalities.
A police official confirmed that a case under FIR number 209/ 2021 under sections 147, 148, 149, and 326 were registered against them for ‘creating a law and order situation’ in the area following the military operation.
Two militants were killed on Monday, December 13 in the Rangreth area of Srinagar outskirts, police had said.
“After the military operation locals of the nearby areas protested and pelted stones on the armed forces and raised anti-India slogans which created law and order problems in the area,” the official said earlier.
