Ludhiana: One person was killed and five others injured after a blast took place inside a court complex in Ludhiana city of Punjab on Thursday afternoon.

The blast reportedly took place around 12:22 pm in the washroom on the third floor when the district court was functioning.

The explosion damaged the walls of the bathroom and ripped through a section of the building, besides shattering glass in nearby rooms. The district court was crowded and functioning when the explosion took place, reports said.

The injured were later carried out of the building and police were trying to remove people from the complex. Two of the injured people are women and three men.

Ludhiana’s police chief Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said one body has been recovered.

“Probably that person was either carrying explosive or was very near to it. We are awaiting the arrival of the NSG team from Delhi. Four injured are out of danger,” the police chief was quoted as saying.

Reports added that a team of the National Investigation Agency of India has been sent to the blast site and an investigation has begun.

Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Channi condemned the blast and urged people to stay calm. “Anybody trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the state will be taken to task,” reports quoted Channi as saying.
