Srinagar: At least 34 flights to and fro Srinagar airport have been cancelled due to poor visibility amid rains and snowfall in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday.

Officials said that all Indigo flights (13), Spicejet (6) and Vistara(3) besides most of the Air India and Go First flights have been cancelled.

42 to 44 flights were scheduled for today and it was unlikely that any flight will take place today, they said. Some international flights are scheduled later tonight. “Given the weather conditions, they are unlikely to operate,” they said.

However, officials said that the call on the remaining flight operations will be taken depending on the prevailing weather conditions during the day.

Pertinently, Kashmir parts received fresh snowfall, bringing down the temperature further across the Valley. The snowfall also led to the closure of several far-off roads.

Meanhwile, the Jammu and Kashmir’s weather department has issued an ‘orange alert’ as the present weather system of snowfall was expected to “intensify”.

“As expected, weather is overcast in both JK with widespread light rain, snow and moderate snow over higher reaches,” an official of the MeT office said.

The official added, “Present weather is likely to intensify as the day progresses. Expect moderate snow, rain in plains and heavy snowfall over higher reaches with main activity later tonight and tomorrow in both Jammu and Kashmir.”

There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow- the situation to be watched), amber- agencies need to be prepared for severe weather, and red- which means action needed by the agencies.

The weather office has urged people not to venture out on avalanche and landslide prone areas, unless extremely necessary.
