India reports 2.51 lakh COVID cases in last 24 hours

New Delhi: India reported more than 2.51 lakh- 2,51,209- coronavirus cases and 627 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry of India said on Friday.

With 627 deaths and 3,47,443 recoveries, active cases declined to 21.05 lakh (21,05,611). The daily positivity rate is now at 15.88 per cent.

The recovery rate has marginally increased to 93.6 per cent. The daily positivity rate- the share of coronavirus tests that return positive and are considered a key marker of the pandemic’s status- is down from 19.59% to 15.88% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 17.47 per cent.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to chair a high-level virtual meeting with the health ministers of southern states and UTs this afternoon, to review the COVID situation and protocols in the region.

The health ministers of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be present at the meeting, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) director Sujeet Singh said the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron is more prevalent in India now. Addressing the media over the current COVID situation, the government said, as many as 1,292 cases of Omicron variant were found on genome sequencing in December while the number rose to 9,672 in January.
