New Delhi: As Pakistan claimed that it destroyed a missile launched from India in Mian Channu in the Punjab province of the country, the Defence Ministry of India called it a “technical malfunction” that was “deeply regrettable”.

“On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry,” the Indian Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

“It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident,” it added.

Earlier, the Directorate of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that a missile launched from India entered Pakistan and landed in Mian Channu in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

The unarmed supersonic missile launched from the Indian side travelled 124 km into Pakistani airspace and fell at Mian Channu in Punjab province at 6:50 pm PST.

According to DGISPR, a high-speed flying object was picked up by the Air Defence System of Pakistan. It landed in Mian Channu and damaged some civilians’ property. No human causality is reported according to ISPR.

According to experts quoted by the Pakistan media, the supersonic Indian projectile shot by Pakistan Air Force in Mian Channu appears to be a variant of Indo-Russo BrahMos Cruise Missile having 290 KM range and 2.8 Mach speed stocked by Indian Air Force at a base in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan.
