Assam: Two days after a fish trader Safiqul Isam was allegedly killed in police custody in Assam, the cops arrested his wife, Rashida Khatun, and his minor daughter.

At least 6 persons, including Islam’s wife and daughter, have been arrested for allegedly burning down the Batadraba police station in protest of the custodial death of Islam, reports said quoting officials.

“In the video footage, both the wife and the daughter can be seen setting fire to the police station. The others arrested are also relatives (of the deceased),” Indian Express quoted Nagaon SP Leena Doley as saying.

Doley said to the newspaper that three cases were registered following the incident: a case of unnatural death in connection with Safikul’s death in custody; an arson case related to torching of the police station; and a UAPA case, since police suspect the accused have “terror links.”

The police said they were checking if the accused persons are connected to the Ansarullah Bangla Team, a banned organisation in Bangladesh.

Police said the minor girl has been apprehended as per Juvenile Justice rules.

This happened a day after the Nagaon administration in Assam demolished the homes of Muslims who had allegedly set the Batadraba Police Station in the district on fire over the case of custodial death of fish trader, Safikul Islam.

The district administration has also demolished Islam’s home.

Islam was detained by the Assam Police late on Friday evening when he was going to board a bus for Sivsagar.

Islam family’s told The Hindu that the police had demanded Rs 10,000 and a duck as a bribe to release him. “We could only afford a duck, so they [police] beat him to death,” Islam’s wife said.

Islam’s wife was told that her husband had been taken to Nagaon Civil Hospital, where she found him dead.

Shortly after Islam’s death, a mob had torched the Batadraba police station in the Nagaon district.

A special investigating team led by Nagaon assistant superintendent of police has been formed to look into the torching of the police station while an inquiry into the death of Islam will be conducted by Karbi Anglong assistant superintendent of police, Scroll.in reported.
