New Delhi: Perturbed over the silence of political parties over the “ruthless repression” of Muslims, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president M Jawahaeullah has written a letter to opposition members calling upon them to unite against the BJP led GoI which has been engaged in “eroding the basic values and ethos” of the Constitution of India, Muslim Mirror reported.

Underlining that electoral democracy is turning into electoral autocracy, the Tamil Nadu legislator has emphasized the need for opposition unity to safeguard India’s democracy and hinted at the upcoming presidential election as an opportunity to show unity.

“At a moment when there is a monstrous growth of fascist tendencies in our nation I. M. H. Jawahirullah, Present Legislator of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, President of Manitha Neya Makkal Katchi, representing the oppressed sections in general and Muslims in particular write to you to impress upon the need of all opposition leaders to join together in opposing this shameful display of authoritarianism and repression that is eroding the basic values and ethos our great nation has represented in the past,” the Muslim Mirror report says quoting the letter.

“Ruthless repression has been increasing in the past eight years of misrule not because there has been no resistance from us but because there has been no ‘united’ resistance from us. Individual Resistance by political heavyweights to maladministration has been reimbursed with detentions by foisting false cases,” the letter mentions.

It added, “Unscrupulous exhibition of religious intolerance has made a popular Islamic scholar to lose his nationhood, a Muslim Cleric in Uttar Pradesh to taste imprisonment and for few unfortunate Muslims death by lynching. The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) ACT 1991 passed in Parliament has been literally thrown into the dustbin by fascist forces aided and abetted by those in power”.

“India, a source of stimulation to the countries of the world to follow tolerance, respect others’ rights and co-existence is being condemned by nations that were formerly our allies and had accepted our leadership in the past. The Politics of hate has stooped to such a low level that genuine protests has been retaliated with discriminatory bulldozing of individual residential properties by local government authorities. Bulldozer Justice superseding the Supreme Court and subordinating the Rule of law is a sign that the nation is besieged from within”.

The letter says, “This unprecedented level of degradation of Indian democracy has to be fought to redeem democracy so that the supressed soul of the nation finds utterance to further peace, freedom and democracy”.

“From an Electoral Democracy we have transformed ourselves in to an Electoral Autocracy because we have not aligned ourselves to fight the forces of autocratization. An imminent historical need requires us to put up a cohesive confrontation to these forces of destruction to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of the mammoth leaders of our Independence Movement to ensure that History records we were no less to our forefathers who taught us the value of wiping every tear from every eye”.

“The motto of our nation is Truth alone Triumphs and to ensure untruth does not taste triumph we need to put up a united resistance. Untruth shows signs of triumph not because it has acquired people’s popularity but is following the classic example of Divide and Rule. Hence it is our historical duty to unite together from North to South, East to West overcoming all social, political and personal barriers,” the letter mentions.

“In the current disastrous scenario it is a national duty for us to evolve a minimum working relationship of National Parties the Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Parties, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party with regional Parties like Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Telengana Rashtriya Samithi. Telugu Desam, YSR Congress. Bijju Janata Dal. Jharkand Mukthi Morcha, Akhali Dal, National Conference and others and also parties representing Dalits and Muslims to prove the simple philosophy ‘United we Stand, Divided We fall’. Such a working relationship may later be forged into a formidable alliance for the presidential election and a successful redeeming of our nation in the forthcoming 2024 elections,” the letter concludes.
