Baramulla: In a shocking turn of events, a Kashmiri cleric was arrested for raping a minor and burying the newborn with the help of two others whom the cleric had asked for help to bury the Holy Quran. The cleric is in jail now and police says further arrests are expected.

Under the jurisdiction of Kunzer police station in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, Sub-divisional Police Officer Tangmarg Hilal Khaliq Bhat said that officials received information that a newborn was buried in the local graveyard whose whereabouts were not known to the locals and they suspected something suspicious.

Following the input, the the SDPO said police on August 29, registered the complaint under FIR number 115, 2022, and started the investigation.

He said that it was revealed that the cleric who was leading prayers in the local mosque of the same area had sexually abused the minor and impregnated her.

“The cleric with the help of two other men buried the newborn without informing anyone from the village and told the helping duo that it is a Holy Quran that they are helping in burying,” the SDPO said.

Suspecting mistrust, the duo let the cleric go home and opened the grave again for cross-check. They found the newborn inside and subsequently informed the police.

It was also revealed that a local medical practitioner has helped the minor to deliver the child, police said, adding they have taken up the further investigations and more arrests are expected in the case.
