Church vandalised in Chhattisgarh, police officer attacked

Bastar: A senior police officer sustained head injuries and other security personnel were injured on Monday while they were trying to quell a violent mob which vandalised a Church in Narayanpur district in the tribal Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.

Sadanand Kumar, the superintendent of police in Narayanpur, has received head injuries. He was later taken to hospital for treatment.

“Some members of the tribal community went to attack a church in Bangalpara area. During the violence, someone attacked me. An investigation will be conducted into the entire incident,” he told reporters.

An Adivasi group protesting the subject of alleged forced conversions in Narayanpur convened a conference. A heated argument between two opposing groups rapidly broke out. People exchanged blows while chairs and stones were thrown around. It quickly escalated a fight.

SP Kumar said that protesters arrived near Vishwa Dipti Christian School in the afternoon and tried to charge towards a church located in the school premises. He said when he along with other officials was trying to specify the protests, he was hit on head.

Later, more number of armed forces personnel were called on the spot.
